University of Aberdeen – Student Intern
Over the years, Global Connects have developed excellent relationships with local universities, and this has been further extended with a new link with the University of Aberdeen.
Back in February, Fiona Woodford, took part in a Zoom presentation for the University of Aberdeen’s Masters students. In attendance on this presentation were some other language professionals, namely a foreign languages teacher, a translator and interpreter from the Hague, the university’s careers advisor and the new Head of Translation for the new translation degree at Aberdeen.
After this presentation, the students in attendance were entered into a prize draw to win a day’s work shadowing at Global Connects. Alexandra Thompson was the lucky winner and has today completed a full day with us in our Hope Street office. Alexandra has had extensive practice at using our CAT Tool, memoQ, by working on a couple of translations, creating term bases and gaining an understanding of memoQ statistics and QA reviews. This is the first time Alexandra has had the chance to practice working in a CAT Tool and has found the experience to be really helpful and instructive – and something to consider when approaching her future career, possibly as a translator. Alexandra’s degree is in English Literature and French and has focussed on children’s literature and poetry as part of her dissertation…unfortunately not much children’s literature to translate today at Global Connects, but certainly she has gained some useful experience in researching medical and legal terms while practicing in memoQ.
It’s been a pleasure to have Alexandra with us today, and we wish her luck in finishing her Masters degree and her future career, whatever that may involve.
