You will remember Mohammad, a postgraduate student from the University of Strathclyde, from our previous post describing his internship in Spring 2025. Mohammad has now been able to provide some advice for future interns in his own words:

“To any student considering an industry-based placement, Global Connects is your place.”

What I found most interesting was seeing how collaborative and fast-paced the industry can be. There is a misconception that translation is solitary work, but in this placement I witnessed how crucial teamwork, clear communication, and shared tools are in delivering high-quality results.

I have to be honest, the workload was higher than I had expected but it was such an enjoyable experience. I encountered several challenging tasks; however, the one that stuck in my mind the most involved translating a letter from a convicted prisoner. It was difficult to translate, not because of the terminology used, but because I had to balance between neutrally and accurately translating the letter and coping mentally and emotionally with its content. Such tasks taught me how building emotional resilience is as important as enhancing one’s knowledge and vocabulary.

I am leaving this placement with a deeper understanding of the translation industry, confidence in my skills, experience in using translation technologies and CAT tools, as well as experience in handling sensitive content ethically and professionally.

Looking ahead, I plan to finish my MSc at the University of Strathclyde, return to my home country, and continue building my career. I am also exploring the idea of pursuing a PhD, possibly focusing on ethics in translation and video game localization.

To any student considering an industry-based placement, Global Connects is your place. It will challenge you in the best ways possible, and you will learn much more during your placement than what you learn in the classroom alone. As for undergraduate students, do not be afraid of pursuing a postgraduate degree. If you enjoy translation, if you are passionate about it, doing an MA is absolutely worth it; it will sharpen your skills, knowledge, and experience in translation and prepare you for your professional career.

We were happy to have Mohammad on our team and wish him all the best in his career. We look forward to working with him again in the future should we be able to have the opportunity.

Our next student-intern will begin in August this year – stay tuned for updates!
