Continuing our industry-leading internships, we had Amy join us for seven weeks of translation and project management training.
Amy has experience in retail and marketing, bringing a range of business-forward skills to her internship. She also spent time as a language assistant in Albacete, Spain, helping school children to improve their English language skills. At Global Connects, Amy has had the opportunity to develop translation and project management skills using manual methods and CAT tools. Amy described her experience of the internship on her last day with us:
- Why did you want to take on an internship with us?
“I wanted to take up an internship with Global Connects to gain experience using my language skills in a professional environment. As I study Spanish and Marketing at University, this experience was the perfect opportunity to gain an insight into how different parts of the company operate. As the internship entailed both translation and project management, I was eager to gain experience which relates to both aspects of my degree. Outside of my language assistantship in Spain, I had never had any experience using my Spanish in the workplace before, so this felt like an amazing opportunity.”
- What did you learn during your internship?
“My time at Global Connects helped me to understand how a translation company operates. The project management aspect allowed me to see how high-quality translations are achieved, how budgets are assessed, and how the company interacts with both its translators and its clients. I was able to learn how to organise translation deadlines, interact with stakeholders and navigate different software. Using XTRF software showed me how project management is organised across the team, and memoQ aided me in my translations, and allowed me to perform Quality Assurance checks.
The translation aspect of the internship allowed me to gain experience using language skills in a professional workplace setting. I was able to identify consistencies in language (e.g. formal styles used in official documents) and learn new vocabulary (e.g. legal and medical terms). During my time at Global Connects, I experienced challenges with my assigned translations which helped me to learn how to employ a variety of linguistic techniques. For example, how to accurately translate medical terms which do not translate literally. I also received feedback on my completed translations, which allowed me to assess my strengths and weaknesses in terms of Spanish.”
- What surprised you the most about working with us?
“What surprised me the most about working with Global Connects was the time and care taken into each individual translation. I did not anticipate how much importance is stressed on formatting (for example addresses) and spacing. This was particularly important with right-to-left languages, as the formatting can be tedious. After gaining experience within the company, I now realise how important this is to ensure that every translation provided by the company is of a high standard, and that the client is satisfied.”
- What will you be working on
“I will now be continuing my studies at the University of Strathclyde, and I am due to graduate in July.”
As you can see, Amy had a well-rounded, deep-dive into the Translation industry and learnt a lot from her time with us. We all enjoyed working alongside her and showing her the ropes. She worked well with our software systems and shared thoughtful perspectives of the future of the industry. We wish her well in the rest of her studies and at the start of her career.
