Global Connects ‘ translation and project management placements continue to be a popular way for students to gain insight into the translation industry and some of the key roles within it.
Susannah joined us in January this year and completed her 7-week placement in March. Studying French and Spanish at the University of Strathclyde, Susannah also had interesting linguistic experience already – having interned at Radio Lingua Network and volunteered for COP26. She brought experience in different areas of retail with her, allowing her to quickly understand the range of services that Global Connects offers to clients. Here at Global Connects, Susannah had the opportunity to further develop translation and project management skills using manual methods and CAT tools. Here’s a sneak peek at how it went:
- Why did you want to take on an internship with us?
“I have always enjoyed translation at university and so I thought it would be a great to see what the career of translation was like day-to-day and to gain some experience of this.”
- What did you learn during your internship?
“I learnt a lot! Firstly, I learnt how to use different software used in translation and project management, as well as how to properly proofread documents. I also improved my translation skills, attention to detail and admin skills. Finally, I discovered some new languages that I had never heard of before which was very interesting.”
- What surprised you the most about working with us?
“I was surprised at how much I had to use my technology skills in the job – something which, although didn’t come naturally to me, I think I have improved on.”
- What will you be working on
“Going forward, I will be preparing for my final exams, and I think that gaining experience of working on professional translations will be a big help for these – especially the translation ones!”
As you can see, Susannah had an immersive experience in the Translation industry, gaining a comprehensive understanding of its inner workings, especially in the public sector. We thoroughly enjoyed guiding her through different translation and project management processes. She gained a lot of confidence with different types of software and provided insightful perspectives on the industry’s future. We wish her success in her exams and at the beginning of her career.
