Back in February, I was lucky enough to work with talented Advanced Higher Spanish students at Eastwood High School. Students were developing their ideas around nature and the environment to submit essays to the University of Edinburgh’s School Issue of Babble magazine.
In delightful news, I can announce that all of the essays have been published! Under the theme of the environment and nature, students wrote about sustainable living, responsible travel, the benefits of walking, biodiversity, climate change and the impact of the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Eastwood students wrote in Spanish, and the magazine also features essays written in French, German and Simplified Chinese (Mandarin). Themes of friendship and relationships are also explored in this issue. If you can read any of those languages, I encourage you to explore Babble’s School Issue to better understand young people’s perspectives of contemporary issues. If you can’t yet read those languages, I encourage you to start learning!
A big congratulations to Eastwood students and students from other high schools who were published! It’s fantastic to see students writing non-fiction in foreign languages and opportunities like these are truly inspiring for younger learners finding their voices.
